Many believe social media platforms are a necessary part of a photographer’s workflow. Unlike a website, image hosting sites offer the photographer a chance to engage with their audience and gain valuable tips and insights into their work. However, the largest percentage of images receive no feedback at all. A ‘thumbs up’, a ‘like’ or ‘good job’ offers no help to the photographer.
Two photographers understood the problems with other image hosting services and created 100asa.com. Their photography platform idea was not only to encourage curating but make it the only way for photographers to show their professional images.

So it was a post on 2011 and now in 2016 it can be definitely said that 500px has done an incredible job. Its so popular now a days and many photographers even consider it as a better choice than Flickr! A long way to go 500px!

With Regards to DSLR Photos:

I have had a love hate relationship with Insta for a while and only recently embraced the system.

I only upload mobile snaps despite having some great dslr photos awaiting processing including awesome African wildlife photos.

Likewise, I enjoy profiles where all the artist used was a phone since it levels the playing fields, gives everyone a stripped down medium and puts the focus on your composition, your eye, your creativity and your dedication as opposed to your technical knowledge and your gear.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.I know I will probably embrace it at some stage, starting with an eye-fi card for my V1. In the end, as long is it is still instagram and not latergram, your medium should not really matter.

I know the quality of some photos is not ZOMG, but that's not the point of this medium is it? That's just a bonus.

Exactly..!! I use both SLR and the iphone, however the more I use the iphone and its editing apps, I feel like i'm doing and encouraging "lazy photography".

Waaaaaaaaa. Like all those trendy out dated filters being added aren't layering. You are doing way more to your photos then most DSLR photogs ever do! Get over it and welcome quality to this community.

There is also the grandfather plan where former pro users can keep paying 29 USD per month. The only drawback is that the new layout is less practical for browsing. I cancelled my pro account and Yahoo is going to re-pay the difference. As I don't like the new layout I will go back to self hosting my image galleries.
